Bangkok, Feb 20 — Is Loch Palm one of the most under-rated golf courses in Thailand? Dutch golfers Marius Koen and Peter Kloeppers think so. And so does Mark Siegel, the owner of leading Thai inbound golf tourism company, Golfasian, who says he enjoys Loch Palm more than any other course on Phuket.

Set in a valley just 10 minutes from Patong and within easy reach of Phuket’s popular north-eastern beaches, Loch Palm is the little brother of Red Mountain, just named as the best course in Thailand by Planet Golf, an arm of the powerful US Golf Digest network.

Designed by Thai resident Jon Morrow with his business partner Al Tikkanen, Loch Palm opened in 2006 and has since attracted more than 250,000 golfers to its tranquil setting around Crystal Lake.

“In one word it is a very relaxed golf course, “ Mark Siegel says. “It is set around a large palm tree-lined lake, hence its reference to the Scottish term ‘Loch’, combined with the tropical setting in the name ‘Palm’.

“The front nine plays across the flat lands of the former open-cast tin mine, while the back nine plays around some of the cliffs created just before the site was abandoned some 80 years ago. Most holes feature wide fairways, which are quite forgiving and allow golfers of all abilities to have a relaxed day golfing in Phuket.”

After completing their rounds, Marius Koen and Peter Kloeppers said they were pleasantly surprised about the quality and playability of the course.

“As this was our first round in Phuket we thought we’d try Loch Palm before going on to Red Mountain and some of the other courses on the island. But we liked it so much, we decided to come back for a second round and it was just as enjoyable as the first.

“Loch Palm may not get as much attention as Red Mountain, which is truly wonderful, but golfers coming to Phuket shouldn’t go past it in favour of the more high-profile courses. It’s a great part of a Phuket golf holiday”.

Among many great holes on the course is the downhill par-3 14th that plays to a lakeside green, with commanding views over the surrounding countryside from the tee.

Stay and play packages for Loch Palm and Red Mountain, both owned by MBK Public Company Limited (which also owns and operates Riverdale Golf Club in Bangkok) are available at the on-site Tinidee Hotel, which has 45 superior and deluxe rooms available. Bookings can be made through Golfasian. Visit for details.
