Club house Hole 18Lotus Valley Golf Resort is located north east of Bangkok; approximately 50 minutes from Suvranabhumi International Airport. Originally conceived as an out of town oasis for golf and relaxation it has gone through several phases of development resulting in what is now a world class golf facility.

Lotus Valley Golf Resort is one of only a handful of Gary Player designed golf courses in Asia. 4 years ago a refurbishment was undertaken by Turfpro, a Thailand-based organization that is staffed by US experts who have worked with the likes of Nicklaus Design and Colin Montgomerie.

As well as Turfpro upgrading the greens and surrounds, the fairways were re-laid with Seashore Paspalum grass that thrives on treatment by salt water rather than conventional chemicals, emphasizing Lotus’ green credentials. In addition improvements were made to the clubhouse and practice facilities to the tune of over $10 million in total. A golf academy, staffed by Thailand’s Tony Meechai Golf, was also established.

This entire program has been supervised over the past two and a half years by the General Manager, Canadian former tour pro Derek Schade. Derek was previously Director of Golf at Muang Kaew Golf Club, working with Schmidt Curley on its refurbishment and going on to supervise the build and launch of Chiang Mai Highlands, remaining for 6 years; both courses are members of the Golf in a Kingdom program.

Green Hole 10The course measures just over 7,000 yards from the tips, with the par 4s generally favoring a draw off the tee to fairways that taper at strategic driving distances.  Water is in play on most holes and each has significant bunkering. In keeping with Gary Player’s ethos, each hole presents a risk reward option with a straightforward route for par and tougher drive for lower handicaps in particular who want to maximize their birdy opportunities on the multi-tiered and contoured greens that provide for a variety of challenging pin placements. Both greens and fairways are in exquisite condition.

The modern club house features a large airy lobby and entrance area, a well-stocked pro shop, and locker rooms sporting Japanese baths; a wonderful way to unwind after play. The Lotus Restaurant has an excellent reputation and wide selection of Thai, Japanese, Chinese, and Western food. There are plans in the next year to build an on-site boutique hotel to completely fulfill the resort nature of the facility.
